What does biodegradable mean?

We’ve received several questions on this, so to clarify and confirm this is not a corn or vegetable based product. Many of us will remember “biodegradable” films in the past that were made with corn starch so micro organisms would consume the corn starch and the film would break down. Unfortunately, most of those films did not perform well and the clarity and overall appearance were not acceptable for most applications.

Today, a greatly enhanced and improved version of a corn starch like process is available in the form of polylactic acid (PLA) with properties making it now ideal for many rigid and semi rigid applications such as shrink bands, blisters and clamshells. Due to their stiffness, most PLA products do not lend itself for soft (wrapping) type applications.

Then what is oxo-biodegradable?

Oxo degradable is similar to biodegradable but does not require the presence of micro organisms to create the breakdown of the film product. It features a chemical additive that is blended into the film that accelerates the degradation process that would normally take many years to occur. The end result is a plastic film that is recyclable and/or will breakdown under many different waste conditions.

This also produced a much softer film that can be used for a much wider variety of applications such as bubble packaging and even inflatable pillows used for protection and void fill purposes. By the way, we offer those too.

Our Eco Friendly Bubble Packaging

The first thing you will notice is that it is tinted green to distinguish it from other, standard products. It is recyclable as a #4 PE (polyethylene) material and of course it is oxo biodegradable as well.

From a void fill and protective perspective it is clean, lightweight and molds beautifully around even irregularly shaped products. Our standard stock product comes in 12” wide rolls that are perforated every 12” so the correct amount can easily be torn off of the convenient 250’ long roll. Other bubble sizes, widths, and perf patterns are also available so let us know if you require a different size or put up.
